Where in the World are the Crescent Star Islands, aka the Moon and Star on Earth?

Where did the “Moon and Star on Earth” photograph originate? The above image was uploaded to the flick.com photography site by Ajith Kumar on 1 November 2005. He describes himself as a communication operator working for “Indian Express”, a daily newspaper. Sometime during or before 2005, Wilson Hayes included the image on a webpage entitled “What A Beautiful World.” The same image, with the same title, “The Moon and Star on Earth”, is also found in a collection of beautiful photographs by “Oracle Whimsical” entitled “You only pass this way once,” dated September 23, 2005. A third site, “Secretopinions.com” included it also. I found it at “Gar’Z”, circa 2006, where it was entitled “One of Earth’s Dynamics of Unity - Moon/ Star Lake .” In January 2006, the image was uploaded to a site of predominantly Muslim themed images from Turkey: http://spaces.msn.com/members/onurhoney/.
The crescent and star are symbols of Islam, therefore, this image probably originated with a person of the Muslim faith who is skilled with Photoshop, as it appears to be a composite of two islands. “The Moon” part looks like Molokini Islet, a small chunk of land located a few miles off the coast of the island of Maui in Hawaii. Molokini is popular with tourists who go there to dive and watch fish along the reef. Notice the boats lined up, and also notice that the top boat anchored off the crescent island, Molokini, has been copied and pasted over to the left, at the bottom of the star island. I don’t know where the star-shaped island came from, but it is not from the waters next to Molokini!
The original image that was obviously used to make the fake or composite “Crescent Star Islands” may have originated as an illustration for a Hawaiian newspaper, Maui News. The photograph was used to illustrate a story of the rescue of six Molokini divers in February of 2003: “MAALAEA, Maui (15 Feb 2003) .” In the news report the image is entitled “Molokini, Maui.” I later found that same image entitled “Molokini” used as advertising of an Oahu, Hawaii business, Will’s Condos.com, which I have copied below.
A Google image search retrieves many pictures of “Molokini Island”, which is also known as Molokini Crater and Molokini Inlet. One can also map this island on Google’s satellite maps and see that there is absolutely no star island next to it.
This actual land formation is probably geologically impossible, considering the various forces that create land masses in oceans. However, the hand of man is quite creative. While Googling, I discovered another interesting picture of islands - The Palm Islands. They are also referred to as The Palm Dubai and The Palms, and are the three largest man-made islands in the world, lying along the coast of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The builders describe them as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.

I received an attachment on an email of “You only pass this way once.”, and being the skeptic I am, had to google the photo of “The moon and star on earth”. I was not surprised to find it wasn’t a genuine place, but wouldn’t it have been nice if it had been. Thanks for posting your article. It didn’t take me long to find my it.

Hi, I also google’d to see if this pic was real. i Highly suspected that it wasn’t. It looks artificial, cause nature is not so perfect for the geometry of the star.
Also, water is seen breaking on the right of the cresent and also on thr right of the star. Any high school physics or geography student will tell you that this won’t happen in real life. The RHS of the star is within the protected are of the cresent and thus waves will come around from the bottom and top of the star.

You think The Palms are impressive, how about “The World”, being built by the same company. http://www.theworld.ae/

I also received the email “you only pass this way once.” The minute I saw the picture of moon and star on earth, I knew the star island was photo-shopped onto a photo of Molokini crater. Now I’m dubious about the authenticity of some of the other photos. Oh, well, they’re nice to look at anyway.

Carol P. - It is a good idea in this Internet age to be skeptical of any photographs. Photo-shopping is just too, too easy.

I just received the email with the lovely photos from different places round the world - it definitely is the sort of email that has a feel good factor about it and makes one think about being happy to be alive. However, I was amazed at photo of the Moon and Earth and thought I must google that and find out where it is only to discover it is a composite photo - a bit disappointing but think I was already dubious however, none the less nice photos.

Though it is obviously not real, it is beautiful, and made me smile for awhile just dreaming about a lovely vacation, so it was well worth it!!

Thank you for researching this. What I find disturbing is the sheer gall of these developers. There are better ways to dump billions of dollars into the ocean than the pollution that will result when these “islands” wash away.

Every time I see something that catches my eyes, I try to find in on the internet. Well, that is what happened when I’ve seen the “Moon and Star” islands. This is what I came up with after searching for these “perfectly” shaped islands. Interesting! marika

im thinking, maybe these are seprated, but it is too much of a coincidence for them to look so perfect, dont u think… maybe it was meant to be?
Comment by asmie — November 24, 2006 @ 2:12 pm
thanks for the post - I too was thinking the developer was of Muslim faith. Have you seen the pictures of the rock formations? rock artist or photo artist? can’t find anything on the net.

Flor — This is a Babel Fish translation of my English text, as I do not write Spanish:
En hecho, encontré la imagen original dada derecho “Molokini” que fue utilizado obviamente para hacer la imagen falsa o compuesta. La imagen de “Molokini” es de WillsCondos.com, negocio de un Oahu, Hawaii.

The wave action/surf is on the wrong side of the “star”

Thanks for posting your article - I knew it couldn’t be a natural formation (how could I have made it into my 30’s without hearing about it?) but it was fun to dream for a minute! :)

Being of the Islamic faith myself, i am highly disgusted that someone could actually make up this lie just to prove that Islam is the ‘true’ faith. i would like to apologise to all on behalf of the creator of this lie. Nevertheless the cresent island is extremely beautiful.

yeah one other way to tell if it was edited or not witch it is,is by looking at the boats and comparing them and the fourth boat is the same as the boat at the highest point of the picture
