If you remember, as do I, singing “Jesus Loves Me” when you went to Sunday School as a toddler, than you will appreciate this story. During the reign of MAO TSE TUNG who founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Christian church was severely persecuted. Almost no information about Chinese Christians was available to the outside world, as their communications were severely censored. In 1972, a most unusual message came through from China saying that the “This I know” people were well! The Chinese interpreters did not understand the message so they let it pass on. However, Americans understood immediately the reference to the simple children’s hymn, “Jesus Loves Me“. “Jesus Loves Me” was always one of the first hymns that Christian missionaries taught to new converts. The writer of the original poem was Anna Bartlett Warner (1820-1915). She and her sister Susan were daughters of a wealthy New York lawyer. When their father lost much his fortune during the 1837 financial depression, Anna and Susan became successful writers to supplement the family’s income. For the words and more information see Jesus Loves Me.

The famous American author E.B. White (1899-1985) described New York City as the “capital of everything“. Although he never saw the city under attack, many years prior to September 11th, 2001, he wrote “In the mind of whatever perverted dreamer who might loose the lightning, New York must hold a steady, irresistible charm. … This race–this race between the destroying planes and the struggling Parliament of Man–it sticks in all our heads, … The city at last perfectly illustrates both the universal dilemma and the general solution, this riddle in steel and stone is at once the perfect target and the perfect demonstration of nonviolence, of racial brotherhood, this lofty target scraping the skies and meeting the destroying planes halfway, home of all people and all nations, capital of everything.
